Sometimes writing a test is differentiated instruction at Oasis.

ASC students tell their Social Justice course teachers that writing tests make them nervous. So, they are given the opportunity to practice here. All who wrote the test did amazingly well. Congrats to the students. We celebrated with cupcakes.

Getting Ready for the performance - A little makeup and hair please...

Now if we can only remember the moves...

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

A couple of weeks before Hallowe'en, ASC students learn, rehearse, and prepare to perform thriller at Much Music, Dundas Square, and Old City Hall. Among the fans taking pictures and hooting and hollering were community council members, parents, and fans - including veejay Sarah Taylor.

Visual Arts at Oasis

 "Obey Oasis"

Using Shepard Fairey's Obey Giant street art project for inspiration, Oasis students created stencil self-portraits in the Fairey style with their own choice of text. Now these posters are circulating across Canada, with the help of friends of Oasis. Above are our students' faces sighted in Winnipeg Man. Keep your eyes peeled for more photos to come!

Arts Courses at the Arts and Social Change Program

Actor’s Studio - ADA10 and ADA20
Ever thought about acting on stage or for film?Ever had the urge to audition and just see what happens?Want to improve your interview skills so that you have an edge over your competition?Want to conquer your ‘getting up in front of the class’ nerves?Ever wanted to take acting lessons, but were intimidated by a large rowdy class?
There are so many reasons to take ACTOR’S STUDIO at Oasis. We offer a small class, a teacher who is also a working theatre director, guest workshops with professional artists in the community and a whole course committed to working on your skills as an actor or more confident speaker! Whether you dream of your name in lights or not, this course is guaranteed to help you develop the skills you need for a confident and successful future. Learn about the theatre and film industry, the acting profession, and develop acting techniques through audition preparation and scene study.

Drama for Justice: Making a difference in the Community - ADC10 or ADC20
Do you have something to say about youth violence, or police relations? Want to learn more about your rights and the youth criminal justice act? Think you know everything about safe sex and sexual health resources in Toronto for youth? Ever thought about what you would say to younger youth about making positive choices?

In Drama for Justice you will have the opportunity to explore issues that matter to YOU, learn important information that could change your life, be heard in class and on the streets and make a difference to a young person. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to empower yourself and talk about real things that matter to you. Student's in this course will be looking at how drama is used locally and internationally to create change, as well as creating and performing their own street theatre, protest theatre, forum theatre, storytelling, and workshops for children and youth.

Visual Art- An Alternative Perspective
Everyday we are surrounded by art, even though we might not ever step foot in a museum or gallery.  In this class we will study and create art that exists outside of the four walls of a gallery. From graffiti burners and street art stencils destined for alleyways to giant papier mache monster puppets for the Night of Dread Halloween parade to silkscreened t-shirts and button designs for our closets, we’ll bring art on the street into our classroom and contribute art back into our community.

Photography 101 is an introduction to basic film photography. We will be working in colour and black and white, with opportunities to use professional darkrooms. We will also study the history of photography and its many contemporary forms, including photojournalism, fashion photography and photography in movies. The course will culminate with the creation of a photography portfolio and an exhibition of student work in a professional downtown art gallery.

Integrated Arts allows you to work from an interdisciplinary perspective to create work that merges and mixes a variety of art forms. This course allows you to produce work that is rich in substance and as unique as each artist. Create a moving collage, produce a performance piece using photography, movement and text.

Media Arts explores a range of different mediums, allowing you to analyse and produce media texts that are relevant to you and the world you live in. Using a variety of low and high tech tools you will have the opportunity to explore the world of media. Use Photoshop, consider video games, questions what you watch, design a comic book, and create a photo documentary.
